When Zhenia, a mysterious stranger (Alec Utgoff of Stranger Things), arrives in a wealthy gated community of identical white McMansions on the outskirts of a large Polish city, he is welcomed by the residents who embrace his talents as a masseur. Though his hands provide healing, his eyes seem to penetrate their very souls, lifting a disquiet in each of their lives. No one thinks to ask Zhenia about his own concerns, least of all his mysterious origins.
Anchored by Utgoff’s magnetic central performance, this study of class and modern malaise astutely blends magic realism with dark humour and stunning production design to often jaw-dropping effect.
